Dial 'M' for Murder

In this scene the main character is explaining to the criminal that he has been watching him for some time and knows he had commited more crimes. He blackmails him by saying he will turn him in unless he does him a favour. The main characters wife has been cheating on him and he wants her murdered. This shot shows quite a bit of suspense because you know it is leading up to something horrible. He explains the plan and gives him the money. There are a few key objects in this scene, there is the money, the phone, he wipes down everything the criminal has touched (glasses, ash tray etc) offers him gloves to wear.

This scene is the most suspenseful of the film. It shows the plan coming into play. The main guy goes out, the burgular sneaks in, the main guy calls so she answers and the other guy can kill her. The plan goes wrong and she stabs him to death. It is a long and suspenseful scene with dialogue before and after. There are lots of objects in the scene that can be used very well, like the scissors watch, phone etc. There are plenty more.

Psycho

This is a scene where the woman has just checked into the motel where Norman Bates works. The shot keeps switching between the two and the music is creating tension. He is asking her weather she wants to join him for dinner and she agrees. It is fairly suspenseful because you don't know how he will react if she says no. The mirror in the background of her shot is a strong image that could be incorporated.

After having an argument with his 'mother' about having the dinner at home with the woman, Bates asks her to have dinner in the office. He then mentions he would rather have it in the back and leads her in. Once the lights are switched on, lots of stuffed birds are revealed. This builds the suspense and makes him seem all the more odd. The key objects in the scene are obviously the stuffed animals.

When they talk she goes onto the subject of putting his mother in a home because she isnt nice to Bates. He gets angry. The shots and dialogue build the suspense because of the pictures and stuffed crows. Bates then pulls the painting aside to spy on her showering, this is when he kills her, the famou scene. The key object in this picture that he pulls aside. It is a very famous picture called 'rape'. The stuffed crows are also key.
This is probably the most suspenseful scene as people know that the shower scene is the scene where she gets stabbed. It is a also a good scene because the dialogue isn't very well known and there is plenty of imagery to work with. Most of the other suspenseful scenes don't have any dialogue and would be pointless as it will be a mainly typographic poster.

Master of Suspense Poster Series

The concept for the Master of Suspense Poster Series originally was to print on objects that were relevant to the films. It was also possible that I would print posters that could be used in particular places. I later went on to think that this was too gimmicky for me to work with, it would be way to obvious to do something that completely reminded people of the films. I want to make the posters subtle.

I have the idea to use dialogue within the posters. I want to use dialogue that isn't obvious the particular film, but dialogue that evokes suspense. This can be done with typography very effectively with minimal use of image. Older Hitchcock posters are always so obvious. With strong bold images that subconsciously remind us of the Hitchcock work that Saul Bass produced. I am willing to take the complete opposite direction.

Master of Suspense - Rear Window

This is a film that is full of suspense. It is also a film that I could use objects in context for the posters. As i keep saying this feels cheesy and gimmicky so I am unsure weather to do it or not. It is also a film full of concept and is very context driven.

I have picked out the key objects, situations and scenarios from the film that I could pick up on in the poster series.

Master of Suspense - Dail 'M' For Murder

This film has a really great plot and interesting dialogue. Once again I started off wanting to do something with key objects and contexts such as a phone for this film. This is starting to sound more and more cheesy as I talk about it and I am starting to want to go a complete different direction. This is a poster pack brief and a poster, zine and packaging is what I want to create for it. Simplicity is hopefully going to be the key, along with subtlety.

I have once again picked up on key scenes and objects that could be used within the content of the posters and could be used within the context of the posters. I think I may start to pick up on dialogues from the films to go in a different direction.

Master of Suspense - Psycho

For one of the films I am making a poster for, I am using obviously Hitchcock's most famous film, Psycho. I originally wanted to print onto something that is relevant to the film i.e. a shower curtain for Psycho. I think this idea may be a little gimmicky and cheesy. I want to create something that isn't anything like any of the film posters before, something simple and subtle.

The first page of plot for Psycho. I have picked out key moments and objects that could be relevant for a poster series. Titled 'Master of Suspense'.

Fedrigoni Information

The History of Fedrigoni:

The Fedrigoni family has a tradition in the paper world since 1717, when the San Colombano paper mill was set up close to the hermitage of the same name in Vallarsa-Rovereto.The paper mill was sold in 1814 to the Jacob family following the Napoleonic wars.

Giuseppe Antonio Fedrigoni, after a long period dedicated to commerce in paper, began paper production in 1888 in the Verona Paper mill, that was subsequently expanded by his son, Antonio.

From 1931, Gianfranco Fedrigoni, assisted by brothers Renzo and Arrigo, gave new impulse to the development of the company.

The Varone paper mill was taken over in 1938 and the Verona Mill - completely destroyed during the Second World War - was rebuilt in 1945.The Adamas Paper Mill was set up in South Africa in 1948 (later sold to Sappi in 1964); the Arco Mill was founded in 1963.

The three mills (Verona, Varone and Arco) were merged in 1979 to form Cartiere Fedrigoni & C. S.p.A. Since then, Group development has continued with special emphasis on the "converting" sector, with the creation of Arconvert in 1989 and the take-over of Manter SA (Manipulados del Ter SA) in 1993, on European distribution through the dedicated companies distribution companies in Germany (1987), Spain (1989), France and Great Britain (1993). As from the 1st January 2000: the Fedrigoni Group was re-organised, with the transfer of production and commercial operations to the new Fedrigoni Cartiere S.p.A. and buildings operations to Acquaviva S.r.l., while Cartiere Fedrigoni & C. S.p.A. itself became the Group Holding Company.

At the end of 2001, the Fedrigoni Group was awarded the tender issued by "Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato" for the acquisition of "Cartiere Miliani e Fabriano" (heirs to the century-old tradition of Italian paper-making) and its subsidiaries (Cartamano S.r.l., Miliani Immobiliare S.r.l. and S.I.C.M.A. S.r.l.). As from April 2004, thank to an agreement with “Mantegazza Antonio Arti Grafiche Srl” Fedrigoni Group creates Fabriano Securities which will be active in the area of securities systems with the production of a complete range of products technologically advanced such as holograms security-threads, plastic cards, security prints. Fedrigoni Asia began operations in April 2006 with head offices in Hong Kong. The company will handle sales of Fedrigoni papers in the Far East and Oceania

Fedrigoni Environmental Policies:

While maintaining complete compliance with the principles underlying both the development of the company mission and the framing of environmental policies, Fedrigoni has been able to achieve a series of improvements, largely as a result of a proven ability to apply increasingly responsible, ethical approaches to the management of its processes.

With the finest technologies available for improving product quality and efficiency, Fedrigoni has managed to adhere to minimising the potential environmental impacts.  Drawing inspiration from the following principles:

  * Making efficient, respectful use of all natural resources, from water to energy and forestry.

  * Promoting and insisting on concrete and validated practice of responsible defined and recognisable environmental policies on the part of suppliers, in particular those of fibrous raw materials based on wood originating from forestry.

In today's environment all industries are aware of the need to demonstrate sound environmental policies and the graphic design industry is no different. The product section Environmental, lists all the of Fedrigoni papers that have environmental accreditation. We adhere to strict purchasing policies, and 53% of our cellulose purchases are FSC certified material. In order to preserve the atmosphere and fight the greenhouse effect, Fedrigoni has invested in the construction of co-generation gas power turbines for the past few years. We can therefore produce both thermal energy and electricity independently, offering three important advantages for the environment.

  * A substantial improvement in primary energy effectiveness (methane). This saves 20 to 40% compared with traditional electrical and thermal energy production.

  * A reduction in emission of pollution and greenhouse effect gases, in particular C02

* Reduced wastage of electricity which would otherwise come from large external power plants that are generally located some distance from the production unit and which use energy sources with high emissions.

FSC:

The forest stewardship council was the first forest management system to be developed back in 1993, and is still the only label to be accepted by all the major international NGO's (non-governmental organisations) such as Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and WWF. Forests can be FSC certified if they fulfil a set of requirements listed below, and products can be awarded FSC chain of custody certification if they can demonstrate that they come from FSC certified forests. For a paper to achieve this, there must be a clear, linked trail all the way from the certified forest through the sawmills, pulp mills, paper mills, converters, shippers and merchants to prove where the certified label came from.

FSC is an international organization and has both an international website (www.fsc.org) they also offer local sites, for the UK visit: www.fsc-uk.org

Fedrigoni now offers 39 products FSC certified the attached document will help you to identify which logo to use for each material.

Ecolabel

Fedrigoni has a large amount of papers and boards that are Ecolabel certified. This certification is awarded to products and services that ensure a low environmental impact during their full life cycle. This certification is provided by the European Union for the ecological label (CUELE), composed of natural competent organisms, the member states, representatives of non- governmental organizations, syndicates and representatives from small and medium industries, and business representatives.

ISO 4001:

Fedrigoni has also obtained ISO 14001 certification for all its industrial plants. ISO 14001 specifies the actual requirements for an environmental management system. It applies to those environmental aspects which the organization has control and over which it can be expected to have an influence

This standard is applicable to any organization that wishes to:

* implement, maintain and improve an environmental management policy

* assure itself of its conformance with its own stated environmental policy

  * demonstrate conformance

* ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations

* seek certification of its environmental management system by an external third party organization

* make a self-determination of conformance

This is the information for the booklet itself. Most of it you can get off the website, but the FSC issues I got from the FSC website because it has more in-depth information on it.

Fedrigoni Picture Tests

This was the picture I was going to use for the Fedrigoni brief but it was too small an image and a little too green. I was going to go and take a picture for myself but my photography skills aren't very good and the sun isn't shining at the moment.

This is the picture that is going to be used to for the final book. It is a large image and wont contrast too  much with the light green paper.

Year Book Cover

Just a quick mock-up of how it a cover could work with the branding on it. It does work pretty well for sure.

Printers

Got in touch with Evolution Press today in, they're based in Sheffield. The site is nicely set out and they look as though they do a lot of stuff with designer type people, but they look as though they may be a little expensive.

This is where Kyle and Merlin got the prospectus printed. I got in touch with Kyle and he sorted me out with a number and e-mail address of the guy that he spoke to. Big help.

Fedrigoni Initial Ideas - Type Ideas

This is the typeface first used because I thought it would fit in more with the title of the booklet and the titles that run throughout the booklet. It turns out that when there is a lot of body copy it looks really bad and blocky. You cant read a word of it, so I am going to go for something a little more subtle and smaller.

This is the same banner but with the new typeface, times. It is a lot more legible and is easier on the eye, not as strong a typeface. I found it is also a nicer contrast by having a really harsh typeface to a lovely soft one.

The same with the body copy.

Fedrigoni Initial Ideas - Mock up

Front cover (cut through)

The pages are also mostly cut through so it leads onto the next image. Still keeping a simple layout ending up with the address of the showroom to get people to visit, which is essentially what the booklet it trying to do.
